Manco Genetics is an artificial insemination company that was founded in 1959 by Warren Manuel. Based in Nokesville, VA, Manco rapidly expanded to serve all of Virginia, West Virginia, and East Tennessee in the areas where cow populations merited. Semen collection service was added to aid in the greater use of top sires.
Thousands of dairymen and cattlemen were trained in regular schools in the Manco service area and in special schools over a much larger area. With the conversion to a Direct Herd Service company, service was expanded to include Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of several other states serving over 2,000 customers. The Large Project Insemination service was developed to accommodate the utilization of new breeds and introduced in the 1970's. A computer based corrective mating program offered by one of the AI companies was added in 1970 and rapidly became a intricate part of the Manco service program. A fleet of full service vans supplemented by distributors and supported by seven district managers, three evaluators, and a dedicated office staff combined to make the company motto, "THE SERVICE DIFFERENCE", a reality. The "Mating for Genetic Improvement" (MGI) program was developed in 1985 to fill the demand for a computer based corrective mating program that would consider sires regardless of source, price, or availability. The first herds were mated using the MGI program in May of that year. Soon the MGI program was being used from Virginia to California and from Minnesota to Texas. It has been in continuous use since that time helping to produce thousands of cows. The Manco Sire Sorts program was also introduced in 1985 and was used to aid dairymen in choosing their sires. In December of 1990, the semen marketing division of Manco was sold to Federated Genetics. Since that time, Manco has devoted its full attention to the MGI program. In 1997, Web-MGI was introduced to allow dairymen to mate their own herds by accessing MGI on the Internet through the World Wide Web (http://www.webmgi.com). Other related products are under development and will be added and introduced in the near future. |
